It had the makings of a titanic matchup between two state tournament teams from last season. The defending 3A Pierce County League champion Lincoln Abes would pay a visit to perennial 4A powerhouse Bellarmine, with a serious dose of city bragging rights on the line. The Abes would take to the Bellarmine gymnasium on Tuesday, Nov. 28, without punch of the city’s best guard, following his off-season transfer to a Seattle school that will go unnamed. Meanwhile, the Lions lost some serious size, as well as their top scorers. It looked as though it could be anybody’s ballgame on paper. However, once the Abes defensive pressure ramped up, and the Lincoln legs began racing up and down the court, it was apparent that these Abes looked surprisingly similar to the record-setting crew of last season. In the end, Lincoln ran away with an 80-58 victory powered by senior Emmett Linton III’s 26 points. Anthony Braggs added 15, with Willie Thomas chipping in 12 and Le’Zjon Bonds dropping 14, to go along with five assists and four steals. Lincoln visits defending 2A champion Foss on Friday, Dec. 1. Bellarmine visits rival Curtis on the same night. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
