End of Summer blast


Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium’s End of Summer Blast gives you three days of non-stop summery fun Sept. 2-4. Join the polar bears, red wolves, tigers and more in an all-weekend celebration thats jam-packed with cool activities — literally. Watch the animals play with icy treats and summery enrichments and enjoy some of your own at the Kids’ Zone or cafe. Then wander around to discover the animals up close through animal encounters, keeper talks and an action-packed Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater show. Info:

Have you seen the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance at The Christmas Revels? Whether you’re mystified, fascinated, amused, or confused by it, come to our “Bromliad” to learn the dance and participate. Or bring a penny whistle, recorder or fiddle and play the tune. Puget Sound Revels will teach the steps and general concept. BYOA (bring your own antlers) — hint: branches make pretty good antlers, look around your yard. Or bring a picnic and watch. clown school


The Big Foot Clown Alley will be hosting an educational class on the fundamentals of clowning. Clowning 101 will cover character development, make-up and costuming, as well as skills in balloon art, face painting, skits, comedy magic and general silliness. This is a no-charge seminar open to the public, bring a friend or relative. The course is Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. aAt Fife Community Center. Send inquiries to or visit for details.

Cider fest


Here in Washington we’re lucky to be the global leader in apple production. On Sept. 16, in observation of Washington Cider Week, Edison City Alehouse (5602 S. Lawrence St., Tacoma) will be celebrating the tasty, adult beverage that results from all of those apples: hard cider. There will be more than 15 awesome ciders from across Washington including, Finnriver, Snowdrift, Tieton, Whitewood, Nashi Orchards, Carlton Cyderworks, Tilted Tree, Cockerll and many more.
