Tahoma West, UWT’s literary arts magazine, presents the first of Tahoma West’s open mic events on campus and around downtown Tacoma at the Swiss Restaurant and Pub (1904 Jefferson Ave., Tacoma) on Dec. 27 at 6 p.m. In conjunction with One Person’s Trash, The Wordlings, and Creative Colloquy, there will be performances of a variety of literary genres including poetry, spoken word, short stories, excerpts from larger pieces, and even music. POLAR BEAR PLUNGE
Kick off the New Year on Jan. 1 with a cool tradition — a refreshing plunge into invigorating Puget Sound. The Cub Plunge, for youth under 10 years of age, takes place at 11:30 a.m. The Adult/Family Plunge is at noon. The Polar Bear Plunge is free, just show up and enjoy the fun. It takes place at Point Defiance boat launch (5912 N. Waterfront Dr., Point Defiance Park). For the safety of participants, life jackets will be available and lifeguards will be stationed on the docks. Daring folks who jump in can warm up afterward in heating tents, sip free hot drinks, and purchase treats from the snack bar. Changing tents will be available. This fun, healthy, family-oriented ice skating rink will be open through Jan. 2.
