In memory of our fallen comrades

During this Independence Day week, we at the Tacoma Weekly News remember our brothers and sisters in journalism whose lives were taken from them at The Capital newspaper on Thursday, June 28. Just as our country commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on that historic July 4, 1776, let us also at this time commemorate the U.S. Constitution and our Founding Fathers’ brave vision to establish the First Amendment. We honor Wendi Winters, Rob Hiaasen, Gerald Fischman, John McNamara and Rebecca Smith as true American heroes killed in the line of duty to preserve and protect what colonial statesman George Mason called in the Virginia Declaration of Rights (1776) “one of the greatest bulwarks of liberty” – freedom of the press. May these five souls rest in eternal peace.
