Alma Mater to host evening of indie singer/songwriters

Three great singer/songwriters are all dropping their new albums at a release show that will take place at Alma Mater Tacoma’s Fawcett Hall (1322 S. Fawcett Ave., Tacoma) on Nov. 16 at 8 p.m.

Laura Veirs, a prolific songwriter for nearly 20 years, proves the depth of her musical skill on her 10th solo album, “The Lookout.” Here is a batch of inimitable, churning, exquisite folk-pop songs; a concept album about the fragility of precious things. Produced by Grammy-nominated Tucker Martine, Veirs’ longtime collaborator, “The Lookout” is a soundtrack for turbulent times, full of allusions to protectors: the camper stoking a watch fire, a mother tending her children, a sailor in a crow’s nest and a lightning rod channeling energy. Whitney Ballen’s new album is called “You’re a Shooting Star I’m a Sinking Ship.” Of the album, Seattle Weekly says, “‘You’re a Shooting Star, I’m a Sinking Ship’ is a sonic breakthrough for the 27-year-old. While she’s long stood out in the local music scene thanks to a one-of-a-kind voice that’s part mousy murmur, part bashful specter, part warbling yelps, and part nasal crooner, her previous albums were very much tiny DIY solo collections. ‘You’re a Shooting Star, I’m a Sinking Ship’ rips off the ceiling and gets expansive.” (

Mike Dumovich’s new album is “The Copper Thieves.” Music critic Chris Estey says, “Settling on the psyche like a prickly hallucination, this is plucked mosaic shibboleth blues, where you’re willing to follow the weathered vocalist’s story anywhere, delighted by each shuffle of twilight imagery and montage of dreams and wilderness. Dumovich has almost unbearable confidence, really seducing the listener into the labyrinth of his storytelling.”

Brian Barr, meanwhile, calls Dumovich’s songs pensive – delivered in a matter-of-fact voice accompanied by “radiant guitar plucking that can put you in a trance.” (

This show is for those 21 and over. Cost is $15 pre-paid and $20 at the door.
