Remembrance Ceremony honors lives lost on 9/11

Tacoma firefighters hosted a Remembrance Ceremony on Sept. 11 – the 17th anniversary of that tragic day in 2001 – to mark the sacrifices and lost lives during the terrorist attacks. The local ceremony was held at the Tacoma Firefighters Memorial on Ruston Way.

“It really is a special gift,” Mayor Victoria Woodards said of the gratitude that Tacomans feel for the sacrifice that first responders make every day to protect society from harm and selflessly risk their lives to save the lives and property of others.

Tacoma Fire Chief Jim Duggan said the communal vow to “never forget” the first responders’ lives lost during, and since the Sept. 11 attacks includes a challenge for all residents to honor that vow with a pledge to make the community better for future generations by honoring diversity and civic engagement.

“Democracy takes hard work,” he said.
