There’s great news to share for fans of Tacoma’s Old Milwaukee Café & Dessert Company. After temporarily closing the doors on May 23 last year, the beloved 6th Avenue eatery is scheduled to re-open on Tuesday, March 10 at 7 a.m. The staff is starting out slowly though, with open hours Tuesday through Friday.
The legendary Old Milwaukee had to close for a while when co-owner Chad Kerth injured his shoulder and toe.
The Kerth’s friend and business partner Kevin McGlocklin set up a GoFundMe account on behalf of the couple right after Chad’s injury. The fundraising goal was set at $10,000, but to date it has raised $13,790, with 241 donors and 2,500 shares. Just reading through donors’ comments show how much the café and the Kerths are loved in Tacoma.
“This couple have lifted my spirits so many times. They are both amazing and kind!” said one donor. “Pat and Chad have contributed so much to this community. We wish him a speedy recovery and want to help pay their generosity forward by donating to this campaign to help this lovely couple,” said another.
In addition to the café’s reputation as a delicious destination for breakfast and more, it is also known as a place that gives back to the community in lots of ways. For example, the Kerths have been longtime supporters of equality for LGBTQ people, donating food for Rainbow Center fundraisers and adding the Old Milwaukee Café to the list of participating restaurants in Pierce County AIDS Foundation’s annual Dining Out for Life fundraising event. Pat even received the Ruby Award from the Pride Foundation of which she is extremely proud.
Originally, Old Milwaukee Café was located at Freighthouse Square before relocating to 6thAvenue. It’s amazing what the Kerths have created at their little café – an at-home ambiance that makes you not want to leave and big servings of freshly made food that has won them numerous “Best of…” awards and accolades from customers who love the prices there too. The menu makes choosing hard to do – salads in small and large servings, sandwiches ranging from the traditional BLT and egg salad to tuna melt and grilled cheese, burgers with a soup or salad option, and last but not least a breakfast menu so large that it has its own menu.
The café is located at 3102 6th Ave., Tacoma.
