JUSTICE ARCHITECTURE: WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DESIGN OUT OF LOVE with Dr. Barb Toews, UW Tacoma
Ever feel small and insignificant when you walk inside a grand and ornate building? How about irritable after a day in a windowless meeting room? If so, you have something in common with crime victims and offenders and their experiences in courthouses and prison cells, respectively. These feelings of insignificance and irritability do little to support healing for the victim or accountability on the part of the offender. This Think and Drink will explore design concepts for justice architecture that better meets the needs of victims, offenders, and communities. Come see what happens when we design out of love.
Dr. Barb Toews is Assistant Professor in criminal justice at University of Washington Tacoma. Her research focuses on the relationships among criminal/restorative justice, architecture and environmental design, and psycho-social-behavioral-judicial outcomes for victims, offenders, and justice professionals. She has taught restorative justice and design courses inside correctional facilities and co-founded Designing Justice+Designing Spaces (DJ+DS), an initiative that engages incarcerated individuals in the design of justice spaces that promote accountability and victim and offender healing
