By the late nineteenth century America was the strongest industrialized
nation in the world. She promised the opportunity of jobs, wages, and
allowed freedom of national identity and religious expression. The lure
for Croatians to emigrate was tantalizing, exciting, drenched in fear,
Portrayals of six founding families of the Slavonian American Benevolent Society
illustrate the early struggles and rich legacies the Slavic population contributed
to Old Town Tacoma and the Puget Sound region.
The exhibit is a permanent installation in the Slavonian Hall and made possible
by the Pierce County Historic Preservation Grant Program.
