Voice your thoughts on proposed marijuana use buffers

On Wednesday, Sept.6, the City of Tacoma’s Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on a possible code amendment regarding Marijuana Use Buffers, at 5 PM at the Asia Pacific Cultural Center (4851 S. Tacoma Way).

At the request of the City Council, the Planning Commission is considering an amendment to the Tacoma Municipal Code that would add local definitions of “playground” and “recreation center or facility.” This possible amendment would also include the “metropolitan parks district” in the ownership chart, in order to protect the facilities owned by Metro Parks Tacoma to the level of buffering intended by the state, but currently not covered by the definitions found in the existing state law.

The proposed code amendment is intended to clarify the types of land uses that will be buffered and protected from legitimate marijuana retail, processing and production businesses, and is not expected to generate adverse impacts to existing or future businesses.

In addition to the comments received at the public hearing, written comments are being accepted until 5 pm on Monday, Sept. 11. Comments may be submitted to: Planning Commission, 747 Market Street, Room 345, Tacoma, WA 98402, via fax at (253) 591-5433, or via email to planning@cityoftacoma.org.

To review the proposed amendment, visit cityoftacoma.org or contact project staff Lihuang Wung at lwung@cityoftacoma.org or call (253) 591-5682.
