Work at city’s trash processing center will cause delays later this month

The City of Tacoma’s Solid Waste Management will be resurfacing the tipping floor in the Receiving Building Aug. 25 and 26. This will result in longer than normal wait times for customers over the weekend.

“We are encouraging customers to plan for the delay, and if possible, bring garbage to the Tacoma Recover and Transfer Center during the week or either the weekend before or after so that they don’t have to wait in longer than normal lines,” said Shane Pettit, Assistant Division Manager for Onsite Operations.

The maintenance is needed to replace the floor in the Receiving Building, where customers unload their garbage, which had been worn down from the equipment that scrapes the floor when scooping up trash for transport to the landfill.

“The floor gets worn out over time from the daily use,” Pettit said. “Solid Waste routinely maintains its buildings and resources to ensure that they are safe and functional for use.”

The Tacoma Recovery and Transfer Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 3510 South Mullen Street. For more information about what is accepted, rates or hours and directions, visit them online at or call them at (253) 573-2100.
