Weather forces WSDOT to cancel ramp closures

Due to forecasts for windy, wet weather, contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation have cancelled ramp closures scheduled for this week along State Route 16 and Interstate 5 in Tacoma. The eastbound SR 16 ramp to southbound I-5 and South Sprague on-ramp to southbound I-5 will remain open to travelers both nights. Additional closures will be rescheduled at a later date.

Work has been underway to build a new alignment to Interstate 5 at the State Route 16 interchange to allow for high occupancy vehicle lanes.

While the ramp closures have been cancelled, the previously scheduled maintenance work to replace damaged barrier at South 56th Street will proceed as follows:

Friday, Jan. 4

  • 10 p.m.
    • The northbound I-5 collector/distributor at South 56th Street, and the eastbound and westbound South 56th Street on-ramps to northbound I-5, will close through 5 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5. Motorists will need to use alternate routes to access northbound I-5 during this time.
