Second day of ‘sick out’ leaves special needs students searching for transportation

Tuesday marked the second day in a row that more than two dozen — about half of the — bus drivers for special needs students in the Tacoma School District have called in sick, forcing parents and school administrators to find alternate transportation.

About 400 students were left without transportation when their buses failed to arrive on Monday and Tuesday. The drivers are hired by the district and are not contracted through First Student, which provide most of the bus services for the district.

The drivers for special needs students are members of Operating Engineers 286. Their contract runs through next fall.
