Lane closure on southbound I-5 in Fife may bring backups

Drivers traveling on southbound Interstate 5 through Fife this weekend will want to give themselves extra time reaching their destinations.

Contractor crews finishing the I-5 Portland Avenue to Port of Tacoma Road Northbound HOV project will close a single lane of southbound Interstate 5 through Fife from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, to 6 a.m. Monday, Sept. 17. The around-the-clock single-lane closure allows the contractor to work on the highway’s drainage systems.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is encouraging drivers to take an alternate southbound route such as State Route 167, to travel early or to delay discretionary trips.  Data from WSDOT traffic engineers show that closing this single lane could lead to backups that could reach up to seven-miles, peaking around 5 p.m. on Saturday.
