KNKX has secured a space for its new studios at the historic C.N. Gardner Building in the heart of Tacoma’s downtown Theater District. The location will enable KNKX to increase its South Sound news coverage; provide more opportunities for live and local music performances; convene civic conversations; and extend its educational outreach to area students.
KNKX’s Tacoma studios had been located on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University since 1966. In 2016, the community raised $7 million in 137 days to save the NPR-affiliated station, then known as KPLU, and purchased the license from the university. The terms of the sale require that KNKX, which stands for “Connects,” move off the PLU campus by June of 2019. KNKX must begin broadcasting from its new Tacoma home by July 1, 2019.
