Feedback sought about proposed temporary shelters regulations

On Wednesday, Feb. 7, the City of Tacoma’s Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the Proposed Temporary Shelters Permanent Regulations. The commission meeting will be held in the Tacoma Municipal Building Council Chambers (747 Market St., 1st Floor) and will begin at 5 p.m. with the public hearing beginning at approximately 5:30 p.m.

The proposed regulations include amendments to various sections of the Tacoma Municipal Code, Title 13 – Land Use Regulatory Code, and would allow temporary shelters that are responsive to the needs of various homeless populations and would be scoped and hosted by faith-based and non-profit organizations, resulting in enhanced safe, healthy shelter space.

The proposed permanent regulations modify the Temporary Shelters Interim Regulations that are currently in effect. The interim regulations were originally enacted by the City Council last June, and subsequently modified it in October. The Planning Commission is inviting public comments on the proposed permanent regulations that, subject to further changes, would be forwarded to the City Council for adoption before the six-month interim regulations expire on April 16.

In addition to comments received at the public hearing, written comments are being accepted until 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 9. Comments may be submitted to: Planning Commission, 747 Market Street, Room 345, Tacoma, WA 98402, via fax at (253) 591-5433, or via email to
