The City of Tacoma has been working with its community partners to create a comprehensive action strategy on affordable housing. Following an intensive four-month process which included a series of community listening sessions, focus groups and other avenues for public feedback organized by the city and its community partners, the City Council received its last update before work on the proposed strategy begins.
The update included a review of Tacoma’s key challenges as it relates to affordable housing, as well as recommended strategic approaches that the city could consider taking.
Key challenges identified include accelerating housing market conditions, a limited rental supply, households experiencing significant housing cost burdens, and community members experiencing barriers accessing or staying in housing.
Recommended strategic approaches to addressing these key challenges included the creation of new housing, keeping existing housing affordable and in good repair, helping community members stay in their current housing, and reducing barriers for those who often encounter them.
It is projected that the proposed strategy will be presented to the City Council for consideration by early fall.
