Bill to require real estate disclosure for drugs to get hearing

A bill to require the disclosure of drug production in residential real estate property sales will be heard in the Senate Financial Institutions, Economic Development and Trade Committee on Tuesday.

Senate Bill 5391 would require the seller of a residential property to inform the buyer if the residence was ever used to make illegal drugs.

The bill was brought after a couple in Maple Valley bought a house and discovered it was contaminated with methamphetamine. Drug testing is not currently required in a home inspection. After purchasing the home and moving in, the couple discovered it had been used as a meth lab. The couple and their young children were forced to vacate the residence while it was stripped down to the studs.
