Tacoma Musical Playhouse (TMP) kicks off the new year with the ultimate celebration of 1960s female empowerment, “Beehive: The ’60s Musical.” “Beehive” nostalgically recalls the days of miniskirts, transistor radios, and flower power, while featuring timeless hits of this thrilling decade.
Take a journey back to the 1960’s through this colorful salute to the women who made the music of the 1960s so special. “Beehive” features beloved singers such as Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, The Supremes, Tina Turner, The Ronettes, The Chiffons, and many more. Audiences will be tapping their feet and singing along to songs like “My Boyfriend’s Back,” “Be My Baby,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” “It’s My Party,” “Proud Mary” and “Me and Bobby McGee.” Told from the perspective of six young women who come of age in this enigmatic decade, “Beehive” takes us from their first beehive dance to the challenges we faced as a nation.
“This show’s music is so iconic. Each of every one of these songs has a special place within everyone’s heart, including our cast,” states Harry Turpin, director and choreographer. “We’ve assembled a dynamic group of women who are willing to pay tribute to the originals as well as bring their own experiences to this music of a generation. Each one of our team, from production staff to performer, is thrilled to get to dive in and explore this music and the incredible stories these songs tell.”
