Park(ing) Day 2018 Providing temporary public open space… one parking spot at a time

Downtown: On the Go! (DOTG) brings Park(ing) Day back to Tacoma on Friday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Park(ing) Day is an international day of turning passive urban parking stalls into active mini-parks filled with people, plants, music, art and games.

Local businesses, organizations and residents will showcase their creativity by transforming more than 40 parking spaces into interactive parks along Pacific Avenue between South 7th Street and South 17th Street. This international event, in its ninth year in Tacoma, calls attention to the need for more urban open space and challenges people to rethink the way they use their streets. Tacoma’s Park(ing) Day, organized by DOTG, is sponsored by BLRB architects and Metro Parks Tacoma.

DOTG is a transportation advocate and resource for anyone whose daily life is downtown. The group envisions a vibrant, integrated downtown Tacoma – where daily life is enhanced by connecting people, green spaces, arts and culture and jobs. Interdependent land use policies and transportation options reinforce an active, compact urban core that is connected locally and regionally, promoting a focus on the movement and interactions of people rather than cars.

Currently, DOTG is a Partnership of 23 downtown businesses, as well as the City of Tacoma, Chamber of Commerce, and Pierce Transit. They support downtown Tacoma businesses through a variety of services, including: Presentations at staff meetings regarding transportation choices for getting to work; meetings with business leadership to review the potential for an employee transportation benefits package or the improvement of the transportation benefits currently offered; frequent forums and symposiums on transportation and land use issues related to Tacoma’s downtown; and walking, biking and transit events and support materials.

Anyone can vote for their favorite Park(ing) Day park online on the DOTG Facebook page. The winner of the “People’s Choice” Award will receive a $100 gift certificate to the downtown business of their choice.
