Stadium District to get new signage

What started out as a simple plan to spruce up the signs in Stadium District has morphed into a grander project.
Three years ago the district received a $5,000 innovative grant from the city of Tacoma according to Denny Faker, president of the Stadium Business District.
The original idea was to just redo the metal signs, which were funded by the city about a decade ago. "Those signs got old fast," Faker commented, and were in much need of being repainted.
However, when they took the signs down, Faker recalled, it was obvious the signs needed to be completely replaced, which is when the project began to bring brand new signs to the district.
The new signage is currently being designed pro bono by TCF Architects, which is located in Stadium District. "The wheels turned pretty slowly" at the beginning, Faker said, but the sign design is nearing completion.
He anticipates the district seeking a sign company soon and for the new signs to be put up on Stadium's signature blue lampposts next spring.
However, before that, Faker expects Stadium to get a gateway sign, which is part of the district's master plan. The sign, which will also be funded through the grant as well as other sources, is slated to be located near where the new condos are being built on St. Helens.
The two sign projects have both been in the works for a few years, and Faker will be pleased when they become a reality, which, he said, is "getting closer and closer."
Faker expects the gateway sign to go up by the end of the calendar year and the new lampposts signage up by spring.
