YOUTH HOCKEY PLAYERS GET A CHANCE TO HONE SKILLS AT PUGET SOUND HOCKEY CENTER.

HOCKEY YOUTH GAIN AN EDGE

Local hockey players had a summer camp at Puget Sound Hockey Center last week. The 28 athletes honed their skills at a camp organized by Northern Edge Elite Hockey School. Based in St. Louis, the organization holds camps around the country. It held one at the facility on the Tideflats from July 12-16.

Jordan Snetselaar grew up playing hockey in Iowa City, Iowa. He attended his first Northern Edge camp in 1994. Eventually he went to work for them.

The camp in Tacoma focused on offensive drills in the morning and defensive drills in the afternoon.

From skating to stick handling, Northern Edge offers a complete players camp, according to Snetselaar. “We focus on breaking the game down. All aspects are covered,” he said. “We pay a lot of attention to detail. If someone is making an error we stop and correct it.”

The camp travels to small towns with no hockey teams, such as Medford, Ore., to major cities with National Hockey League franchises such as Tampa, where it was three weeks ago.

“Having a local team gives them something to emulate,” Snetselaar observed.

The camp ended on July 16 with the players forming two teams and playing a game to display what they had learned over the course of the week.
