On the heels of a big-time pitching performance and an offensively charged first inning, the Wilson Rams scored a 4-0 win over the Foss Falcons to stay undefeated and on top of the Narrows League Bridge Division March 24. Taylor Darneille pitched all seven innings in the contest for Wilson while allowing just two hits and striking out 10.
She baffled Foss batters all day long.
“She hasn’t thrown many games so I was real happy with her,” said Wilson coach Ron Balmer.
In the bottom of the first inning, the Rams came ready to swing the bat. Thanks to a pair of walks and back-to-back singles by Katie O’Brien and Taylor Gomsrud, the Rams were able to score three runs in their half of the first to take the early 3-0 lead.
After that, Darneille worked her magic. She allowed just four base runners to the Falcons – two of whom were caught stealing – and walked just one. It was the kind of performance on the mound that the Rams needed, as their bats went cold after the first inning.
Wilson only managed three more hits the rest of the ballgame and left nine total base runners stranded.
“We left a ton of runners on base,” Balmer said. “We haven’t been having that trouble the last three or four games, we’ve been getting a lot of clutch hits – it’s just one of those things where we don’t get the clutch hit at the right time.”
While he was not particularly happy with his team’s clutch hitting in the ballgame, it was not something Balmer said he was particularly worried about. “It’s just the way the game goes, sometimes you get them, but you don’t always get the ball to fall where you want it to.”
The Rams added another run in the third quarter when Gomsrud reached home on a double steal. Wilson led 4-0 and it was the last time either team would score in the ballgame.
In the game, Gomsrud went 3-3 with one run and an RBI. As a freshman on a team full of seniors, she continued her strong play early in the season.
“She’s a freshman and she’s probably swinging one of the hotter bats right now,” Balmer said. “She’s probably hitting somewhere right around .500 or a little bit above.”
Wilson had just five hits on the afternoon and Gomsrud accounted for three of them.
“It felt really good,” she said. “I was just focused more today.”
Courtney Cabrera went 1-2 in the game with a pair of walks.
Wilson plays its next game at Lincoln March 28, while Foss will look for its first Narrows League win April 7 at Gig Harbor.
